Persons currently living in public housing or receiving other federal housing assistance
are not eligible to apply for Section 8 Housing Vouchers

Section 8 Rental Assistance Information:

The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program offers vouchers that are used to subsidize rent in privately owned rental units.  Vouchers may be tenant based, in which case the client may select from qualified privately owned units, or assistance may be site based, in which case the client must live in  specific housing in order to receive assistance. The Augusta Housing Authority administers a total of 4,572 units in a combination of Rental Choice Housing Vouchers and site based assistance programs. Clients of the Rental Choice Housing Vouchers Program are encouraged to participate in the AHA's Family Self-Sufficiency Program

Additionally, tenant based vouchers are broken into programs designed to help specific groups.

Welfare to Work Vouchers -
Vouchers help families who are currently on Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) or have been on TANF in the past two years and are complying with all WORKFIRST activities. These vouchers can help families move closer to employment and/or gain access to different neighborhoods and schools.

Family Unification Vouchers -
Vouchers help families in situations where children may be removed from the home or are in foster care and cannot be reunited with their families due to housing issues.

Rental Choice Housing Vouchers -
Vouchers are administered through the regular Section 8 waiting list. Applicants must meet normal requirements for housing and local preferences.

Site Based Vouchers -
Through the HUD Substantial and Moderate Rehabilitation Programs units of assisted housing are available at River Glen Apartments, Bon Air Apartments and Richmond Summit.

Georgia HAP Administrators -
The Augusta Housing Authority is working in partnership with nine Georgia public housing agencies and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This group  has formed the Georgia HAP Administrators, Inc. to serve as administrator for HUD assisted site-based units in Georgia. Section 8  Program
